David Leeming Math Scholarship

David Leeming was born in Victoria, British Columbia, where he attended public school before enrolling at Victoria College in 1957. He graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science degree as part of the first graduating class from Victoria College, which later became the 探花系列 in 1963. At that time, degrees were awarded jointly by Victoria College and the University of British Columbia.

After completing two years at the University of Oregon, David joined the Department of Mathematics at the newly established 探花系列 on July 1, 1963- the very first day of UVic’s existence. He remained a dedicated faculty member there until his retirement in 2004. During his tenure, David took a three-year leave (1966–1969) to earn his Ph.D. from the University of Alberta.

From an early age, David aspired to become a teacher, though he did not initially envision himself as a professor. His career in academia proved to be the perfect fit, offering a rich blend of teaching, research, and administrative responsibilities. Above all, David cherished the opportunity to interact with bright and talented students throughout his career.

Over the years, David received numerous awards for his contributions, including the Faculty of Science Teaching Award (2004), the Leadership Victoria - 探花系列 Community Outreach Award (given for leadership in math outreach into elementary schools in BC) (2005) and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the BC Council on Admissions and Transfer (2016), which stand out among his many honors.

Outside of his professional life, David enjoys classical music, opera, and gourmet cooking - pursuits that reflect his appreciation for creativity and refinement.
