Anya's pathway
First-year student Anya flourished at UVic thanks to an entrance scholarship that gave them the support and confidence to embrace new opportunities.
Small town roots
Stepping onto the UVic campus for the first time, Anya Lera felt a strong sense of impostor syndrome.
They had dreamed about attending university since discovering their passion for math in grade three. Despite excelling in high school, they were nervous about the transition from their small high school in Whitehorse, YT, to university in a new city.
"I was feeling nervous about starting university...nervous about the coursework, making friends, living away from home. The scholarship gave me confidence in my decision to come to UVic."
Overcoming imposter syndrome
Receiving an entrance scholarship shifted Anya's mindset.
"I was doubting myself, but receiving this entrance scholarship erased my self-doubt and made me feel like I am meant to study at UVic."
The financial support helped with Anya's living expenses and, in turn, their success as a first-year student. Free from worrying about whether they belong, Anya focused on their studies and getting involved in the campus community.
"There's so many opportunities here. I've been more involved in events and going out with friends than ever in my life," says Anya.
From indoor rock climbing to joining environmental clubs, Anya loves the supportive community they have built in Victoria.
Embracing opportunities and pursuing passions
Although math brings Anya an undeniable spark, another reason they were drawn to UVic is for the American Sign Language (ASL) program. "Communication and languages have always interested me, and learning ASL has meant I have the opportunity to communicate with so many more people," says Anya.
Anya is eager to continue studying math and working towards a Certificate in American Sign Language. As they explore new courses and continue building their life in Victoria, they can already envision pursuing further education beyond their undergraduate degree—perhaps one day becoming a teacher or professor.
With a foundational first year experience and opportunities made possible through the scholarship, Anya is eager to see where their studies, passions and growing connection to the campus community will lead.
