MGB program structure

Program overview

The Master of Global Business (MGB) is a full-time program designed for recent graduates. Taking you to 3 continents over 12-16 months, it immerses you in new cultures and gives you real-world business experience. You’ll finish the program with a global internship that helps start your international career.

The MGB program starts in beautiful Victoria, BC with students around the world. You'll move through your chosen path together as you complete 3 modules and a global internship. 

In each location, you'll learn about the business context of the region:

  • its industries
  • legal and economic systems
  • cultural contours

But you'll also learn about global business. 

You'll build skills in:

  • business fundamentals
  • opportunity recognition
  • application and consulting methods 

At the same time, you'll develop your language skills and a global mindset—the 'soft' skills of effective interaction.

Module 1: Fundamentals

In this module, you’ll learn how business works in a global context, with a focus on North America.

You’ll study finance, strategy, marketing, global logistics and supply chains. You’ll also explore the legal, economic and social factors that shape business in North America.

You’ll follow how a company grows internationally, including:

  • exporter issues
  • international firm issues
  • concerns related to multinational organizations

  • MGB 519 - International Logistics and Supply Chain Management

Module 2: Opportunities

In this module, you’ll explore how businesses find and grow opportunities around the world.

You’ll learn how different industries approach business development in global markets, including in Asia or Europe (depending on your path). Some industries include:

  • steel
  • food processing
  • ship building
  • fishery
  • petroleum
  • high tech

You’ll also study successful global ventures and learn about entrepreneurship in Asia or Europe.

  • MGB 525 - Business Development and Asia's or Europe's Entrepreneurial Environment
  • MGB 570 - Global Leadership and Cultural Intelligence (Cont.)

Module 3: Action

In this module, you’ll apply what you’ve learned to solve real business challenges.

You’ll explore business environments in Asia, Europe or South America (depending on your path) and learn the basics of consulting.

You’ll study a global organization and learn how it operates. This includes its governance, legal and economic systems, and sustainability practices.

You’ll also have the opportunity to provide consulting advice to the organization.

Global internship

The final module offers an exciting trans-national internship to put your learning into practice.

The UVic  on the Business co-op site posts hundreds of jobs each term. You can choose to apply to a range of positions in different industries and different countries. 

International students wishing to work in Canada will receive support applying for a co-op work permit. This is a requirement for international students interning in Canada. 

When it comes to length, role and location, MGB internships are incredibly diverse.
