Research summary
Despite recent advances, metastatic prostate cancer remains incurable and lethal. As such, there is a need for more precise and effective therapies. Recognizing that tumours function as complex ecosystems, Dr. Nicolette Fonseca, Canada Research Chair in Systems Approaches to Cancer Biology, is exploring the interplay between the immune system and genetic vulnerabilities in prostate cancer to look for better treatment approaches.
Fonseca and her research team aim to identify genomic and immune biomarkers that, when combined, can better predict patient outcomes, particularly in cases with DNA damage repair defects. They are also mapping the genetic and immune landscape of bone metastases—the most common and deadly form of prostate cancer spread. Finally, they are trying to develop a test to detect immune escape (a process that allows tumours to evade the body’s natural defenses). Ultimately, their work is paving the way for more personalized and effective treatments, improving outcomes for Canadians who face advanced prostate cancer.
