Research summary
Coastal Indigenous peoples’ visions of justice span the interconnected scales of land, water, home and body. As Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Political Ecology, Dr. Sarah Hunt/Tlalilila’ogwa is exploring these perspectives through Indigenous political ecology, using land-based and community-driven methods to centre the voices of women, girls and LGBTQ2S people.
She and her research team are examining how the rematriation of Indigenous knowledge and cultural materials can shape new definitions of justice, asking what teachings, stories and laws should be shared or protected to sustain this vision. By weaving cultural and historical materials back into community life, they aim to foster self-determination, resurgence and cultural survival. Their work will inform policy and practice for Indigenous nations and governments while expanding global scholarship in Indigenous political ecology.
