Regan Mandryk

Canada Research Chair in Digital Games and Immersive Social Technologies 鈥 Tier 1

Research summary

Digital gaming has the potential to enhance social connection, cognition and emotional well-being. But it also comes with risks, such as discrimination, obsessive play and toxic gaming environments (for example, if harassment, cyberbullying or abusive communication arise). Dr. Regan Mandryk, Canada Research Chair in Digital Games and Immersive Social Technologies, is designing and evaluating gaming and immersive social technologies that promote positive experiences while mitigating harms.

She and her research team are exploring how games can foster connection, improve cognitive function, curb cognitive decline, support emotional regulation, and prevent problematic gaming behaviours. By combining scientific research with game design, they aim to create new games and interfaces that entertain and motivate players and enhance their well-being. Mandryk’s research will shape the future of digital play, ensuring that gaming can be a powerful tool for social and cognitive enrichment.
