Research summary

While cleaner energy and better medical tools may seem like unrelated goals, they both depend on innovative materials and manufacturing methods that can make high-performance technologies more sustainable, affordable and accessible. As Canada Research Chair in Advanced Functional Materials, Dr. Makhud Saidaminov is creating new materials that can power homes with sunlight and make medical scans safer and more effective.

Saidaminov and his research team are working with a special type of material called halide perovskites, a class of semi-conductor materials that can be made cheaply and at low temperatures. In solar energy, they are producing high-efficiency panels using eco-friendly methods, replacing lead with safer metals. For medical imaging, they are developing crystals for X-ray machines that can give clearer results while using less energy. Their work could help make solar power more accessible, improve health-care diagnostics, and support Canada’s growing high-tech sector—all while reducing harm to the environment.
