Canada Research Chair in Human and Social Aspects of Software Engineering 鈥 Tier 1

Research summary

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to speed up software development, but our knowledge of how it will impact the broader aspects of this work is lacking. We need to understand not just how AI will influence the way developers write software, but the software they build for end users. Relying too much on only technical outputs, such as generated code, may blind us to possible opportunities as well as to risks and barriers.

Dr. Margaret-Anne Storey, Canada Research Chair in Human and Social Aspects of Software Engineering, aims to improve how engineering tools can empower software developers to create useful, ethical and reliable apps. She and her research team are focusing on understanding and improving how AI will affect developers’ productivity and the quality of the software they deliver. Storey and her team are also promoting research methods that take into account the humans that develop and use the software.
