Research Areas

Research area one visual

Low-Carbon and Offshore Renewable Tech

Helping communities explore clean, local energy options by assessing site-specific renewable energy potential, testing new battery energy storage and advanced system controls, and building the tools to keep them working in even the most challenging environments.

Research area two visual

Distributed Systems and Hybrid Microgrids

Empowering remote and off-grid communities by analyzing their energy systems to inform local decision-making, then co-designing solutions that reflect the surrounding environment and the community’s clean energy aspirations.

Research area three visual

Green Hydrogen and E-Fuels

Our researchers are developing new materials used in next-generation technologies to turn water into hydrogen more cheaply and efficiently than existing options. Beyond the science, ACET researchers also help communities determine whether hydrogen can meet their energy needs.

Research area four visual

Business and Finance

Collaborating with community leaders, investors, entrepreneurs and policymakers to develop financial tools, ownership models and business strategies that support community aspirations, build resilience and expand economic opportunities.

Research area five visual

Integrated Energy Systems

We work closely with community partners to ensure that their energy transformation makes sense for them and their local environment, and provide a big-picture view that connects everything from people and policies to power systems and economies.

Research area six visual

Scale-Up and Acceleration

ACET's research on scale-up and acceleration explores how local, community-based energy solutions and innovations can be expanded, amplified or reproduced in ways that accelerate energy transformation in other communities across Canada and around the world.

Land acknowledgement

ACET acknowledges, with respect, the traditional territories of the Indigenous Peoples upon whose lands our five collaborating institutions are located: the lək̓ʷəŋən Peoples, Songhees Nation and Xʷsepsəm (Esquimalt Nation), and the W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples, home to the 探花系列 and Royal Roads University; the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation), home to the University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus; the Abenaki and the Wabenaki Confederacy, home to the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières; and the 14 Yukon First Nations, home to Yukon University. We also recognize the Indigenous communities and organizations with whom we have the honour to partner in advancing community-led clean energy transformations.
