Hands-on learning

Work experience

Most BCom students complete 2 paid work terms. You can also choose to do a 3rd term and graduate with up to a full year of work experience.

You’ll apply what you learn in class, explore different career paths and find what fits best.

Mentorship

All BCom students can join our mentorship program. We will match you with a business professional who will guide and support you as you plan your career.

Careers

You'll graduate ready for a range of careers. Along the way, you’ll get 1-on-1 coaching, take a career development course and reflect on your goals and strengths.

Teams & collaboration

Teamwork is a core part of the BCom experience.

You’ll take part in 3 cohorted terms during your degree. These take place during the spring term of year 2, the fall term of year 3 and your specialization in year 4. In these terms, you’ll learn alongside the same group of 50-60 students, creating a close-knit and supportive environment.

In Years 2 and 3, you’ll work in teams of 4–6 students on group projects. This hands-on experience helps you build the collaboration skills employers are looking for.

Case competitions

All BCom students take part in at least 1 case competition. You’ll work in a team to solve a real business problem and present your ideas to a panel of judges. It’s a great way to apply your skills and build confidence.

Lead responsibly

At Gustavson, business is a force for good.

You can work on real-world challenges like climate change, social equity and mental health. You’ll learn how to create solutions that make a difference.

  • courses integrate content linked to UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • events like the Pitch Perfect competition build your innovation skills
  • Working for a Better World awards fund work terms for students at organizations that contribute to social and/or environmental impact
  • the Centre for Regenerative Futures at Gustavson is a research centre dedicated to embedding regenerative sustainability in business

Program structure: building your unique path

You can shape your first 3 terms. Take a mix of required courses and electives to build your business foundations and explore your interests.

In the spring term of year 2, you’ll begin your first full term of business courses as part of a cohort of 50-60 students.

Year Fall Spring Summer
Year 1 Required courses & electives Required courses & electives Free
Year 2 Required courses & electives Cohorted term Work experience
Year 3 Cohorted term Upper level electives Work experience
Year 4 International exchange Specialization Optional work experience

Note: This is a typical schedule for BCom students. Your program order may vary. Students completing the Financial Management (Accounting stream) specialization will have different program sequencing. We encourage these students to speak with an adviser upon acceptance into the program, especially if they wish to pursue an international exchange.

Specializations

In year 4, you’ll choose a specialization and focus on an area that matches your goals. Each option builds strong business fundamentals while giving you deeper knowledge in a specific field.

Exchange

Study abroad at one of our 80+ partner schools. Gain new perspectives, experience different cultures and learn how business works around the world.

Student stories

I really appreciate how much I feel like a person here. I would go to the Zoom recruitment sessions and I'd have my camera on. And after the second one, the people started to recognize me — and I mean, I have pink hair, I'm recognizable. I'd send an email with a question and two hours later, I’d have a response. I felt seen and supported.
