The Academic and Technical Writing Program is delighted to congratulate Sara Humphreys on her award of a SSHRC Connection Grant for the project "Rhetoric, Writing, and Discourse Today."

The ATWP is excited to share that the expanded second edition of Technical Writing Essentials: Designing Professional Communications in the Technical Fields by Dr. Suzan Last is now available.

The ATWP is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Steven Accardi as the new program director, effective August 2026.

On March 18, 2026, the Academic and Technical Writing Program, in collaboration with UVic Libraries and the Academic Skills Centre, hosted the Spring 2026 Write-In. Students from a variety of disciplines came together to focus on their writing, research, and final assignments in a supportive and productive environment.

Dr. Sara Humphreys discussed the origin and evolution of the word "guy" on CBC's All Points West.

Natalie Boldt and Gillian Saunders published an article in Discourse and Writing/Rédactologie. "Avoid, Adopt, Adapt: Positions on GenAI in Canadian Writing Centres" (2025) provides a snapshot of how writing centres are positioning themselves within the current GenAI post-secondary landscape.

The Academic and Technical Writing Program has sessional lecturer openings available for the coming 2026-2027 academic year.

On November 26, 2025, the Academic and Technical Writing Program, in collaboration with UVic Libraries and the Academic Skills Centre, hosted the Fall 2025 Write-In. Students from a wide range of departments and academic backgrounds came together to work on their writing and research projects in a supportive, collaborative environment. Students received guidance from volunteers, who provided one-on-one feedback, research assistance, and writing support. The ATWP extends a heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers who contributed their time and expertise to make the event a huge success, this event would not have been possible without you.

Dr. Loren Gaudet has received the Faculty of Humanities Research Fellowship in support of her book project, The Making of Canadian Lyme Disease: Expertise, Uncertainty, and the Rise of the Constituent Patient, which is currently under contract with University of Toronto Press.

The Academic and Technical Writing Program invites all UVic students to the Fall 2025 Write-In on November 26th from 3-6PM in the Clearihue CALL Centre (A025). Stop by to work on your writing projects (and enjoy free pizza).

UVic Libraries is helping instructors and students navigate the growing role of artificial intelligence in teaching, learning, and research. At the Pro-D event on October 8th, 2025, led by Courtney Lundrigan (UVic Libraries’ Head of Engagement and Learning), attendees learned about the library’s current and upcoming AI resources designed to promote ethical and effective use.

In an article recently published in The Conversation, ATWP Faculty member Dr. Loren Gaudet and the former Indigenous Cultural Resurgence Coordinator for ̽»¨ÏµÁÐ's tri-faculties Lydia A. I. Toorenburgh explain how the Indigenous cohort section of ATWP135 creates a sense of belonging for the students it enrolls.

The Conversation noted that the ̽»¨ÏµÁÐ has "a robust academic writing requirement for all students, regardless of their field of study."
