Appointment of the Vice-President Indigenous
Announcement of new Vice-President Indigenous
I am pleased to announce that, following the recommendation of the Appointment Committee, the UVic Board of Governors has appointed Dr. Angela Jaime as the Vice-President Indigenous (VPI). Dr, Jaime will join UVic on June 1, 2026.
Dr. Jaime is an enrolled member of the Pit River Tribe of Northern California, and is currently the
Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement at the University of Saskatchewan (USask). She brings more than 25 years’ experience in Indigenous education and academic leadership, including roles in advancing equity, anti-racism, and social justice in higher education. At USask, she led the implementation of several significant initiatives, including ohpahatân | oohpaahotaan (the Indigenous Strategy) and The Truth Telling Report. She also led the development of USask’s deybwewin | tapwaywin | taapwaywin truth policy – work that helped support the implementation of UVic’s own Indigenous Citizenship Declaration Policy.
As a researcher, Dr. Jaime’s work centres on Indigenous women in higher education, anti-racism/anti-oppression and decolonization within post-secondary institutions.
When she joins UVic, Dr. Jaime will provide Indigenous leadership across the institution, supporting the continuation and advancement of the Indigenous Plan, ʔetalnəw̓əl̓ | ÁTOL,NEUEL, and accountability in partnership with local Nations, Indigenous communities, and the broader university community.
Dr. Jaime has begun meeting with members of səlxʷéyn sqʷél | SELW̱ÁN SḰÁL | Elder’s Voices and community members to listen with humility, honour the enduring relationships of the local Nations to these lands, and understand her responsibilities as a guest on their territories—beginning her time at UVic in a good way. We look forward to welcoming her to her new role this summer. In the meantime, Lalita Kines has kindly agreed to continue in her role as Acting Vice-President Indigenous, providing continuity and care during this transition.
If you have questions about this process, please reach out to the Office of the University Secretary at usec3@uvic.ca.
