Funding

Undergraduate awards and bursaries

Visit the Student Awards and Financial Aid website to learn about financial aid, scholarships, bursaries, work study opportunities, budgeting and more.

Make sure you apply for awards early. As the deadline for application to a program approaches, the processing times slow due to increased application volume. Early application will also allow you to be eligible for 探花系列 (UVic) fellowships and awards.

Master of Public Health awards and bursaries

Master of Public Health (MPH) students receive funding from many different sources, including fellowships, internal scholarships, external scholarships (such as CIHR or SSHRC), teaching assistantships, research assistantships, employers and unions.

The School of Public Health and Social Policy (PHSP) administers limited funds provided by the Faculty of Graduate Studies for graduate awards (or fellowships) upon admission. PHSP also administers two donor-funded scholarships specific to MPH students:

  • London Drugs Foundation Award
  • James & Phillippa Kerr Public Health Award

At times, PHSP will nominate graduate students for other university-level scholarships when students meet criteria, including UVic’s minimum requirement for award recipients to hold a GPA of 7.0 or above on the UVic scale of 9.0.

More details on funding opportunities for graduate students can be found on the Faculty of Graduate Studies website and in the MPH Student Handbook.

Social Dimensions of Health awards and bursaries

The Social Dimensions of Health (SDH) program does not have guaranteed core funding for students. SDH students receive funding from many different sources, including, fellowships, scholarships, teaching assistantships and research assistantships.

SDH receives a small amount of funding from the Faculty of Graduate Studies that is used to provide one-time entrance awards (non-renewable) for eligible incoming students. Typically, 5-6 incoming students per year will receive an entrance award. The amount per award varies depending on available funds and the number of eligible students. To be eligible, students must have at least a 7.0 GPA on entrance to the program.

You do not need to apply for these awards. All eligible incoming students will be considered automatically at the time of admission.

More details on funding opportunities for graduate students can be found on the Faculty of Graduate Studies website and in the SDH student handbook.

Teaching and research assistantships

Graduate students in the MPH or SDH programs may apply for teaching assistantship (TA) and research assistantship (RA) positions.

PHSP has limited TA positions each term that are posted on the employment opportunities page. SDH students can also apply to TA opportunities in either of their co-supervisors' home departments.

Occasionally, faculty members in PHSP and those affiliated with the SDH program will have RA opportunities for students.

Note: check if a position is remote or on campus before applying to either TA or RA opportunities.

Online learning

All required BA and MPH courses in Public Health and Social Policy are delivered asynchronously through the online learning platform, . Students in SDH who take in-person courses will still likely have to complete some components of their courses in Brightspace, such as submitting assignments.

The Brightspace Pulse app allows you to access course content on your mobile device.

UVic-wide resources
