Undergraduate program planning

Once admitted to the BA in Public Health program, students complete 30.0 units of coursework through core courses, area of focus courses, an elective, a practicum experience and a culminating major paper.

The purpose of this requirement is for you to select an elective that enhances your BA coursework. The elective can be a course at the 探花系列 (UVic) or transferable to UVic at the 200 level or above. Residency requirements do apply.

Disability studies

Complete both:

  • DSST 440: Introduction to Disability Studies
  • HLTH 405: Advocacy for Ageing and Disability in Canadian Society

Complete 1 of:

  • AGEI 472: Healthy Ageing
  • AGEI 473: Chronic Disease and Ageing
  • INGH 452: Indigenous Understandings of Healing and Wellness
  • INGH 453: Wise Practices in Indigenous Community Health
  • INTS 462: The Role of Knowledge in Global Health
  • SOCW 469: Intersectionality in Disability Theory, Policy, and Practice

Indigenous peoples’ health

Complete all:

  • INGH 452: Indigenous Understandings of Healing and Wellness
  • INGH 453: Wise Practices in Indigenous Community Health
  • HLTH 406: Indigenous Global Health

International and global health and human development

Complete all:

  • INTS 460: Foundations in International and Global Health
  • INTS 462: The Role of Knowledge in Global Health

Non course requirements

In addition to your course work, there are two activities you are required to participate in:

The gateway orientation is a multi-day online orientation to the program held during the last week of August before you begin your program. This event introduces new students to the program, their peers and instructions, and learning support opportunities and resources.

The culminating conference is an online culminating conference usually held in the second half of April. You will demonstrate your learning by giving a 10-minute conference presentation at the end of your time in the program.

The following schedule outlines the recommended terms you should enrol in each course to complete the program within 2 years. Because we typically offer each course once a year, it is important to follow this schedule as closely as possible.
